Three Great Reasons Women Benefit from BJJ (Beyond Self Defense)
When a woman is considering starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, she’s bound to hear that it’s a great way to “learn how to defend yourself.” Sure, that’s true, but there’s so much more to it than just self defense. Here are three great reasons that women benefit from BJJ.
Size doesn’t matter
One of the most satisfying aspects of BJJ is its focus on strategy and technique. This is the thinking man’s (woman’s) martial art, and speed and strength don’t necessarily offer any advantage. This is a place where the smaller, weaker opponent can dominate a bigger, stronger partner, because technique really does trump all.
Here at Guerrilla BJJ in Reno, we welcome people of any gender, age and ability. If you’re a women concerned that a smaller stature will be an issue in a class full of men, fear not. Our kids and adult classes are a healthy mix of men and women of all sizes – not that it matters. We roll with anyone, and like we said, size really doesn’t matter.
Perception shift
BJJ is a great way to see exactly what your body can do – and you’ll likely be pretty surprised. Instead of fixating on your “problem areas,” you’ll begin to appreciate the strength of your thighs and the flexibility of your spine. Plus, every BJJ class is the kind of workout that hits every muscle group. As you focus on improving technique and endurance, you’ll also be shaping that physique.
Shattering gender stereotypes
It’s that technique thing, all over again. On the mat, ability should be the focus – not gender. Here at Guerrilla at Freestyle Martial Arts in Reno, you’ll find a level playing field, even as a brand new white belt. That should be the case at any BJJ school you’re considering, by the way, so do yourself a favor and sit in on some classes before signing on as a member.
It can be a little intimidating to start BJJ, particularly as a woman. We hope you’ll follow through on your interest to learn more, and we hope you’ll start here at Guerrilla. Take a look at our introductory offer, come check out a class, or contact us with questions.
