Four Reasons Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a Great Sport for Kids

The benefits of martial arts for kids has been well documented, but what about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in particular? Is this grappling sport beneficial or appropriate for kids? It’s both. Here are four reasons Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at Freestyle Martial Arts in Reno is a great sport for kids.

  • It builds their coordination and balance.

These are foundational skills that help develop athleticism. And while we aren’t trying to turn everyone into an athlete, coordination and balance are assets in life, no matter what you’re doing. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu will also improve flexibility and help kids learn to tune in to their bodies.

  • It’s a great energy-burner.

Little kids have energy to burn, and at Guerrilla Jiu Jitsu in Reno, we’re channeling that energy into something positive. Our 45-minute classes are always age appropriate, and between games, drilling and live rolling, your child will spend the class focused and engaged, both mentally and physically. Which brings us to benefit number three…

  • It develops focus and discipline.

Respect is paramount in all martial arts. Our instructors treat our students with respect, and they expect it in return. Our students quickly learn to listen and follow instructions, both important skills for anyone. Kids learn to focus, to pay attention, to work hard, to commit to something, to fail and to try again.

  • It builds camaraderie.

There’s lots of contact in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and training partners tend to turn into friends. Between games, drilling and live rolling, kids learn how to communicate effectively with one another and with their instructors. Things like eye contact and being respectful are constantly modeled, and our students pick up these traits quickly.

There are many developmental activities out there for kids in Reno. From gymnastics and dance to soccer and baseball, organized activities are worthwhile experiences. But the benefits of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu go beyond physical exercise, promoting confidence, discipline, respect and camaraderie, in addition to self-defense skills.
